Building Characters with Real-Life Inspirations
While writing Cursed Gift, I fell in love with the characters. (Note: during editing, I loved nothing! Editing is a hard process for me—it eats away at my soul. I’m definitely trying to improve that part of the journey.) The characters, though fictional, are inspired by people I know, people I want to know, and—well—people I don’t want to know!
As with most writers, I know myself best (or at least my stories). The idea of glowers and sensers came from my own observations and questions about the world—but it’s also a reflection of who I am. Sometimes I have thoughts that aren’t exactly pleasant, but rarely do I speak them aloud. However, they’re there, deep inside. Especially when I’m driving.
After nearly 25 years in Boston, my blood pressure tends to spike the moment I get in the car. I’ve let a few choice words fly (with the windows rolled up) at drivers I thought were, well, idiots. But often, I’ve been just as bad. These moments of frustration find their way into my writing because they are part of me.
Some incidents in the book even reflect my childhood. No, I’m not a senser or glower, but I do play one in the book! Writing is my way of connecting on a deeper level—processing past experiences by embedding bits and pieces of myself into the story.
Laura, for example, is inspired by several people, including my wife. She embodies intelligence, caution, and pragmatism. Paul represents my more driven side—the "push forward, no matter the cost" attitude. It’s a constant battle for me, ensuring I don’t leave others behind or find myself on a solo journey. Miguel, on the other hand, is a culmination of someone I understand but hope never to become. And let’s just say I’m glad I don’t get his kind of nosebleeds…
Till next time!
